Are Engwe E-Bikes Legal in the UK? Here’s What You Should Know

Most Engwe electric bikes can be ridden legally in the UK, but it's essential to pay attention to the motor power of each model. While many Engwe bikes comply with UK law, some of the more powerful models are not road legal because they don't meet the specifications required for Electrically Assisted Pedal Cycles (EAPCs). These models, often designed for off-road use, can still be enjoyed, but they cannot be used on public roads.

What Makes an E-Bike Road Legal in the UK?
To be road legal in the UK, an e-bike must adhere to the following EAPC requirements:
- Motor Power: The motor must not exceed 250 watts.
- Speed Assistance: The electric assistance must cut off at 15.5 mph (25 km/h).
- Pedal Dependency: The motor should only provide assistance when the pedals are being turned.
By ensuring that you choose an Engwe model that meets these criteria, you can legally ride on UK roads without needing a licence, insurance, or registration.
